Autarki is in beta. Please report bugs in Discord #autarki.

Wallet

You hold the 24 words.

Autarki does not hold them, and there is no account that can reset them. The same install is the shop and the customer.

Write them on paper.

  • 24 English words, shown once. They restore the funds on another machine.
  • They do not restore the shop book, the orders, the catalog, or a Lightning channel.
  • A new wallet can be 99 digits, each from 1 through 6. Your computer adds no randomness of its own.
  • A password is optional. At least 12 characters. It encrypts only your copy of the wallet file.
  • It is not part of the 24 words. Blank leaves the words unencrypted on your computer. A backup of that service is then the seed.
  • Closing the browser does not lock the page. Restarting Autarki does. There is no Lock button.

XBT and BTC.

Pay with XBT or Pay with BTC. You choose the coin, and the payment stays in that coin.

Blake2b XBT

Buttons say XBT or Pay with XBT. The node is Bitcoin Knots. Lightning is Blake2b Lightning.

SHA-256 BTC

Buttons say BTC or Pay with BTC. The node is Bitcoin Core. Lightning is SHA-256 Lightning.

  • XBT and SHA-256 BTC share history only up to the fork. A payment is signed for one chain.
  • Coins from the wrong chain do not pay the sale.
  • Prices are whole sats. A dollar hint, in US dollars or Canadian dollars, does not change the sats.

Receive, Send, and Balance.

  • Whole sats. Prepare builds it. Sign is separate. Broadcast is separate.
  • The browser never receives the signed transaction.
  • No confirmation: not spendable. An ordinary coin spends after one.
  • A mining reward waits longer. On XBT the wait depends on the block. On BTC it is 100 confirmations.
  • Balance is confirmed coins still held. Lightning is a separate jar, not added to Balance.
  • Moving coins into Lightning sends them out of Balance. They confirm before a channel can open.
  • A chain can be hidden in your browser. The saved connection stays on your computer.

Lightning, on AMD and Intel.

Where it runs.

  • AMD or Intel StartOS, Umbrel, and Ubuntu start Blake2b Lightning and SHA-256 Lightning.
  • A Raspberry Pi and Umbrel arm64 start the wallet and the shop. Lightning stays off.
  • A Lightning payment, a shipment, and Mine need AMD or Intel.

What you skip.

  • No second Lightning app.
  • Do not paste a node address, a macaroon, or a certificate.
  • Your wallet's 24 words are not given to either Lightning node.

First start.

  • A new wallet creates both homes, writes each missing seed, and leaves an existing seed as it is.
  • It starts both programs and saves the local link.
  • No coin node of your own: they can still start against Autarki's servers. Your node is used when you connect it.
  • About ten minutes. The page keeps checking. Later starts are quicker.
  • Before a node can take coins, its backup is shown once. You confirm you wrote it down. It is not shown again.
  • Blake2b: that node's own 24 words. Bitcoin: a one-time paper copy of its two seed files.
  • Do not reuse the wallet words. A Bitcoin payment request is refused on Blake2b.

On-chain is your bank. Keep savings there. Lightning is the money you spend. Load it before you go shopping in person.

  1. 1Show the node's address
  2. 2Fill Send with this amount
  3. 3Prepare
  4. 4One confirmation
Those coins leave Balance and sit in your own Lightning node. They are not sent to a shop.
  • The first load takes about ten minutes. A later payment on a channel that can cover the amount does not wait.
  • Skip this and on-chain still works. Install does not open a channel.
  • Lightning sats are not Balance, and not the shop's accounted sats.
  • A Lightning sale is on the sales spreadsheet and absent from the coin journal.

When a payment needs a new channel.

  • A channel that can already pay is used. No choice appears.
  • A store order uses that store's node. A classified uses the seller's node.
  • A mining payment does not use the pool.
  • A new channel asks first. Nothing opens until you confirm.
  • You never type the shop's node. Blake2b and SHA-256 already know the pool.
  • Both ways use coins already confirmed in that node's wallet, and both pay a miner fee.
  • If Autarki's pool cannot be reached, the page says so and offers the direct channel. Nothing was sent.

Use Autarki's pool

One channel, later shops.

  • Pays this shop, or this seller, and later shops that already have room.
  • Routing fee at most 1,000 sats. Your coins stay on your side until the payment.
  • First opening waits about ten minutes. A later payment can reuse it.

Open a direct channel

This shop, or this seller.

  • Open a direct channel to this shop, or Open a direct channel to this seller.
  • No pool fee. It pays only that one node.
  • Same ten minutes. A later payment to that node can reuse it.

A seller does not have to find a peer.

On-chain needs no channel. Lightning offers the same two ways on Blake2b and on SHA-256.

Pay for pool room

The fee fills Send.

  • 20,000 sats of room costs 1,200 sats. 100,000 sats of room costs 2,000 sats.
  • Pay 1,200 sats for Blake2b pool room. Pay 1,200 sats for Bitcoin pool room.
  • Nothing is sent until Prepare, then Broadcast. The page does not open the room.
  • Then a buyer who already has a channel to the pool can pay this node. Routing at most 1,000 sats.
  • The seller's node has to be on. It does not need its own confirmed sats to accept that channel.

Use a direct channel

Leave the fee unpaid.

  • A buyer opens a channel to this shop or this seller. It pays only them.
  • Zero incoming room does not block a buyer who will open a channel.
  • A buyer who will not open one needs the room to be there already.
  • A channel the seller just funded has almost no incoming room. Those coins are on the seller's side.
  • The pool does not hold the sale and does not take a cut of the catalog price.
  • The room fee and the routing fee are the Lightning costs.
  • A shipped order stays on the seller's node until Mark received, and only after a float. The pool does not replace that hold.

How a shipment is protected

Your node, or Autarki's servers.

  • Connect your own coin node under Settings, then Coin Nodes, or use Autarki's servers for ordinary addresses.
  • Until your node is connected, those servers can see a normal address.
  • They do not make a silent-payment code, and they cannot see a coin paid to one.
  • A silent-payment code appears after your own node is connected.
  • XBT Knots and Bitcoin Core do not run on the same computer.

Next: the shop

Install Autarki.

It runs on your computer. A phone on the same network opens that page. There is no separate phone app.
